Joseph F. Mahoney, age 51, of Throop, passed away Thursday morning under the care of Mercy Hospital's Hospice Unit after a courageous five-year battle with Cancer. He is survived by his partner, Kevin Korman, with whom he resided. Born in Scranton on November 1, 1958, son of the late Frank T. and Ceil McDonough Mahoney, Joseph was a graduate of West Scranton High School, Class of 1976. After working many years as a nurse between the Gino J. Merli Veterans' Center in Scranton and St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, he had retired as a local private duty nurse, spending a good deal of his time caring for the residents at Scranton's Jewish Home. Of Roman Catholic faith, he was a member of St. Ann's Basilica Church and was also a member of the Taurus Club, both of Scranton. He enjoyed music and broadway shows and had a passion for traveling. His favorite destination was San Francisco, California, and he and Kevin had taken 22 cruises over the years. His family and friends were most important to him and he was extremely fond of his nieces and nephews. A kind, generous and loving partner, brother, uncle and friend, he will be dearly missed by all who had known him. He is also survived by his brother, Thomas Mahoney and wife Joann, and sisters; Patricia Miller, Jeanne Kehl and Ceil Christiano and husband Rich, all of Scranton, and nieces and nephews. A brother, Frankie Mahoney, also preceded him in death. The family would like to offer its gratitude to Mercy Hospice, Dr. Martin Hyzinski and staff, Dr. Tracey Gilardi and Rev. Mark A. Honhart for his caring, blessings and prayers. A Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday at 10:00AM in St. Ann's Basilica, St. Ann's Street, West Scranton. Relatives and friends may pay their respects to the family on Monday between 5-8:00PM in the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue in West Scranton, 18504. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in Joseph's name to the donor's favorite charity.
